Pityriasis versicolor

A very common superficial infection caused by a fungus that naturally lives on the skin (Malassezia). It causes lighter or darker patches with fine scaling, mainly on the trunk — more noticeable after the summer.

Treatment is straightforward, but it tends to recur in the warmer seasons; there are prevention strategies for those who have repeated episodes.
